Do you wish your home felt more like a haven and less like a circus? Are you so tired at the end of the day but you can only wish for your home to be a calm place? Let me tell you, sweet Mama, I can totally relate. To help you save your sanity, here are 5 simple ways to make your home more relaxing

Make your home more relaxing with these simple tips and tricks. Be inspired to make your home peaceful and inviting.

Can I let you in on a secret….? One of my favorite past times used to be touring model homes. Seriously, I would find out where builders were putting up new homes (not hard to find here in North Texas), then I would go and take my time walking through them.

Do you know why?? Because they were calm and quiet. I would tell the salesperson “Don’t mind me, I am not here to buy a house, I am here for some peace and quiet”.  They always looked at me sideways. Now, I know that is not our reality. Our homes are not meant to look like show homes. Our homes are meant to be lived in. However, we all crave a soothing environment after a long day. I have put together some tips to help you make your home the life-giving place it was intended for.

1. Calm your mood before walking in the door

No matter what kind of day you had, leave the stress of the day outside of the house. This is probably the most important thing you can do to make your home a more relaxing place.

You know the saying, “Do not bring work home with you!” Now of course, if you are a thinker like me, things that you care about will always be on your mind.

And that is okay, just as long as it is not taking up valuable real estate in your brain.

Any negativity or anxiety that is troubling you can and will definitely show up in your home. And, it is usually your spouse and/or your kids that will get the brunt of it. Short-tempered? Irritable?

Leave it at the door.

Your home is your sanctuary. Don’t let negativity rob you of precious time that is meant for your family.

2. Let The Outdoors In to make your home more relaxing

Don’t be afraid of bringing flowers or greenery into your home. Seasonal floral bouquets are a nice way to make your home reflect your personal touch.

Adding a small plant or succulent next to a stack of old books can make a room feel inviting and well balanced.

This is not something you want to overdo. I’m not talking about a jungle here, just some little splashes here and there of the outdoors.

3. Clear Off The Kitchen Counters

I am a visual person and I take in a lot of information from what I see. I do not do well with cluttered countertops.

When my kitchen counters are cluttered, it doesn’t matter if the whole house is clean, nothing in my home feels calm. Seriously, it brings down my whole mood and I get sort of cranky!!! My husband would probably agree.

Physical clutter leads to mental clutter and results in sensory overload.

This can impact anyone in your home and can also put a damper on creativity, yours, and your kids. When my counters are clear I can focus on one thing at a time and I actually get more accomplished.

4. Accent Your Home With Throw Blankets, Pillows, And Candles

Using accents in your home can add warmth and an overall feel of coziness. However, do not overdo it.

An over-accessorized home can be overstimulating and result in mental fatigue. The goal is to create a relaxing environment so you can refresh your soul, clear your mind and simply rest.

Choose colors that complement the décor you already have, but keep patterns and prints to a minimum. Keep it simple.

5. Turn Off The Television and make your home more relaxing

I think we call all agree that we live in an over-stimulated society. There is so much noise to tune out.

So much information that is trying to get our attention that we are constantly distracted. This can be downright exhausting and can steal what is meant to be quiet, refreshing moments.

Many times that noise infiltrates into our home and we don’t even recognize it as such.

Honestly, we have become so used to it that we don’t know what to do with ourselves when it is quiet. Allow yourself to quiet down your space.

Listen to those little feet as they pitter-patter across the floor, listen to your children playing in the other room. Lean in and look at your spouse in the eye when he tells you about his day. Truly listen, be present. Take it in!

By implementing these 5 simple steps you can have a home that you love coming home to every day.

Make your home more relaxing without spending a fortune. Come home to a peaceful place to rest and refresh.
